Portrait by Zak Tsiouklas
Yianni Rowlands is an Australian writer and director working across short films, commercials, music videos, and video art. His work frequently explores the lives of understated characters at odds with the worlds they've constructed, blurring the lines between their internal and external realities…
Rowlands' passion for filmmaking sparked early, with his talent for stop-motion animation earning him accolades at Trop Jr in 2012 and 2016 during his teens. His artistic upbringing, with a sculptor father and ceramicist mother, profoundly influenced his creative development, fostering a love for collaboration and a deep appreciation for the arts. Additionally, Rowlands’ experience as a musician infuses his visual storytelling with a unique rhythm and emotional resonance.
In 2024, Rowlands joined forces with dynamic creative content agency GUILTY, bringing his visionary direction to high-profile clients such as STIHL, McCain, ACMI, The Melbourne International Film Festival, The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Tommy Little. His other collaborations are equally impressive, featuring video projects with the likes of ARIA award-winning punk rock band Amyl and the Sniffers and conceptual artist Marco Fusinato, among others.
With several short films to his name and more in the pipeline, Rowlands has his sights set on writing and directing feature films and limited series. He has a slate of projects in various stages of development, including original narratives and adaptations.
He is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television.
